For international students, health insurance would probably not be considered as the most exciting topic, but it is an indispensable aspect of studying abroad.
Let’s look at it this way. The student is in a new country. Everything around is newfound and exhilarating! As the student gets accustomed to the newness of the place, he/she unexpectedly becomes sick or has an accident. Back in India, there would not be a need to think twice about going to a doctor. But when it comes to the overseas? The student will have to think umpteen times about even considering a visit, just because healthcare costs there can be exorbitant!
Studying abroad not only elevates you on an academic and professional platform, but this also transforms you as a human! The experiences, the culture, and the community mould you into a different personality altogether. One of the greatest lessons you learn while studying abroad is to learn to be on your own feet, to travel and stay alone.
The American author, Neale Donald Walsch has wisely said, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” But are you prepared for the change in a new country?
Here are some safety tips students need to keep in mind while studying abroad:
Research About the City
‘Which country is best for Indian students’ – is often a frequent concern for us. Irrespective of the safety or popularity of a country, research the city and culture, way in advance. Right from the time of selecting the university of your choice, you need to research the city- how safe it is for solo travel and what emergency numbers you need to keep in handy while travelling alone.
Learn the local language: You should have an idea of the local language people speak in the respective country and the currency they use. Try to learn the basics of the language, the basic phrases, especially when used in emergency situations.
Familiarise with customs and traditions: It is also advisable to do a little research on the customs and traditions of the place. If possible, try to read travel guidebooks on the respective destination. This will provide information on the popular places to see and the common festivals of the place.
Connect with the alumni: Try to connect with the alumni to know more about the popular centres in the city and the things you should be at guard while visiting a place.
Always Keep Your Mode of Communication Open
Your mobile phone would be your primary ally while travelling or staying alone.
Charge your phone before the battery drains off completely: Make sure that you have enough balance and charge on your phone, both for making international and local calls. It is always advisable to switch off your Bluetooth or internet data connection, when not in use. Always depend on your data plan instead of depending on the public wi-fi.
Carry a portable charger: Be sure to take a portable charger and power banks, so that you can charge your battery while travelling. This will help you to save the battery life of your phone, especially when travelling.
Always keep your family informed while travelling: Whether you are travelling a short or long distance, it is advisable to keep your family or close friends informed. Let them know your route and how and to where you are commuting.
Seek advice from friends: If you want to explore local or far-off places, seek advice from friends who have been there. They would be able to help you with information that would ease your travel.
Always have a backup plan for transportation: What would you do if you missed your train or bus? Do you have enough money to hire a taxi? You should always keep these in mind while travelling alone and have a backup plan in emergency.
Be Safe with Money
Financial security is always an imperative factor, irrespective of whether you are alone or not. Students need to be extra careful while dealing with money, especially when staying in an unfamiliar country.
Start a savings account: Once you move to a new study abroad destination, start a savings account, and transfer money to that account. Educate yourself on the local banks and ATM counters near you. Also, always be judicious while using your credit card.
Utilize student discounts: Use student discounts wherever possible. This may be while travelling or at restaurants. You may also get discounts while shopping! Why waste this opportunity? Know about this through your friends and do not miss saving a large amount of money through this! Some countries provide global student ID cards which can be used in more than one country. UNESCO has endorsed the International Student Identity Card which can be used in more than 130 countries!
Join Clubs or Organisations
Joining clubs and other social groups will help you build new connections in the foreign land.
Be part of social groups: Being part of social groups will make you feel at home and reduce homesickness. Mingle with them and make new friends! Look out for local groups where you can make friends from the locality who will be of great help in adapting to the regional culture. Being part of their celebrations and festivities will help you feel connected. There can be associations at the university, or around your community where you reside.
Be a volunteer: You can also volunteer for certain activities that connect with your liking and interest. These activities will help you to connect with like-minded people and will be a great platform for building strong relationships.
Take part in extra-curricular activities: Try participating in all extracurricular activities at college, which will again introduce you to new faces which may later turn into beautiful bonding.
Be Cautious of Your Health
While being in a new place, especially in a new country, completely different from what we experienced in our homeland, maintaining a healthy lifestyle would be a great challenge. Amidst the busy study schedules and enjoyment, it is always possible for health to take a back seat, without our knowledge.
Carry a first-aid kit: Ensure that you carry a first-aid kit with you with the medicines for common illnesses like fever, cold, headache or any specific allergic tablets that you take.
Get health insurance: It is always recommended to have international student health insurance. Sometimes, the universities themselves may provide health insurance to the students. Some of the health insurance plans for students studying in the US include the Patriot Exchange Program and Student Journey Plus. Similarly, William Russell, on behalf of the insurance company Allianz Group, provides insurance for international students worldwide.
Dine safely: As far as possible, avoid unfamiliar food from outside, especially fried ones. Know the staple food of each country. Local cuisines are usually considered healthier than fast foods. Consuming local food also creates a bonding with the people around the locality.
Always stay hydrated and get some time to pamper yourself!
Have a Healthy Mind
Mental health is as important as physical activities. Nobody knows you better than you know yourself! Be aware of your mental state and do your best to heal the soul! You know what works best for you when you want to alleviate your negative thoughts.
Stay fit: Practice regular exercise, meditation, and yoga. These will not only help you stay fit but also help you to alleviate stress and anxiety. Always surround yourself with a positive social circle so you do not feel left out. Psychological and emotional well-being is extremely important for students.
Do not hesitate to seek mental health support: Most universities also offer mental health support for international students. Do not be hesitant to make use of those opportunities.
Ways to improve your mental health: The five ways to well-being (according to the New Economic Foundation) are: Connect – to develop relations with others, Be Active – Find an activity and make it part of your life; Take Notice -Notice the changes around you, observe the Nature; Keep Learning – try out new things that will make you confident, and Help Others (Give) - Give away something to your friends or even strangers. This will be a rewarding act for you!
Unlike studying in your home country, studying in a different country is a totally new experience, you have to deal with the challenges along with the limitless perks you enjoy. But once you master the keys to unlock the stumbling blocks ahead of you, then there is no turning back!
Like the late business doyen, Ratan Tata, who has also completed his schooling and college abroad has said, “The only way to win is not to be afraid of losing”.
Go ahead, with all the courage and valour for the brightest future you could demand!
